This Trojan may arrive via network shares.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %system%\AdobeAIM.exe

It drops and executes the following files:

  • %Windows%\gascwm.dll - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_HILOTI.SMAE
  • %System%\adobe66.exe - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_FAKEAV.SM3
  • %System%\adobe91.exe - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_HILOTI.SME1

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.. %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

Autostart Technique

This Trojan adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Adobe Updater 5.2 = %system%\AdobeAIM.exe

Propagation

This Trojan drops copies of itself into the following folders used in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks:

  • %Program Files%\emule\incoming

(Note: %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files.)

This Trojan also has rootkit capabilities, which enables it to hide its processes and files from the user.

This Trojan did not exhibit backdoor routines during testing.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

    TROJ_FAKEAV.SM3
    TROJ_HILOTI.SME1

Restart in Safe Mode
